    About Me

Dr. Benveniste received his training in the San Francisco Bay Area and worked there for many years. He did his undergraduate and master’s level clinical psychology training at San Francisco State University and earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology – Berkeley/Alameda Campus (now called Alliant University). In San Francisco, he maintained a private practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy working with adults, couples, adolescents, children and families seeking assistance for a wide variety of problems. For over 25 years, he also devoted much of his time to community mental health. He worked in community outpatient clinics, a crisis clinic, and in residential treatment settings.

In his private practice, Dr. Benveniste worked in conjunction with public and private schools and was a member of the Psychological Professional Group of the San Francisco Police Department seeing police officers and their families in psychotherapy. The Department of Mental Health in the city of San Francisco also confidently referred many AIDS patients to him for psychotherapy.

He has supervised psychologists in training for many years and was the Director of Training in two programs for doctoral level psychology students – La Familia Counseling Service in Hayward, California and the Nevitt Sanford Initiative in Fairfield California. He also taught graduate students at the University of California at Berkeley, The Wright Institute and the California School of Professional Psychology – Alameda Campus.

    Further Professional Experience

From 1999 through 2010, he maintained a private practice in Caracas, Venezuela and taught graduate students at Universidad Central de Venezuela and Universidad Católica Ándres Bello. He also participated in the Red de Apoyo Psicológico (Psychological Help Network) by providing trainings in crisis intervention following the massive Venezuelan floods of 1999 and subsequently directing an investigative treatment program for a small group of children directly affected by the disaster. Later, when there developed dangerous levels of societal panic associated with the Venezuelan National Strike (Dec. 2002 – Jan. 2003) and subsequent periods of intense social unrest, he wrote articles and gave lectures and trainings on distinguishing panic from fear and developing coping strategies in the midst of high anxiety.

In 2010 he relocated to the Washington’s Pacific Northwest, opened his private practice, began delivering lectures to professional groups and continued his work on a variety of writing projects. In April 2018 and April 2019 he gave seminars and supervision to students in a professional training program at Wuhan Mental Health Center in The Peoples Republic of China. He continues this group supervision throughout the year by Skype/Zoom and plans to return to China after the COVID-19 pandemic to resume yearly in-person trainings.
